Yak 40 Aircraft - The Yak-40 brought air transport to the most remote regions of the Soviet Union and faithfully served the airlines of the Eastern Bloc. As Piotr Butowski recalls, it had only limited success in the West, but it can still be found all over the world.

The RSK MiG Corporation Yak-40 '48112' was built in early 1972 to operate with General Air as a D-COBB and is the oldest example still flying.

In the early 1960s, Alexander Yakovlev, head of Moscow's Opytnoye Konstruktorskoye Byuro (Opytnoye Konstruktorskoye Byuro; Experimental Design Bureau), submitted a tender for the development of the Yak-40 aircraft, which could seat 20 passengers, later expanded to 24 passenger. They are proposed to compete with the model. Ilyushin (Il-70) and the joint team of Antonov and Beriyev (An-Be-20). The idea was to replace Lisun's Li-2 (the Soviet licensed copy of the Douglas DC-3) and Ilyushin's Il-14 (which were used on local routes) by an equally simple, undemanding aircraft twice as fast ).
